Embark on an extraordinary half-circumnavigation of Antarctica, a voyage that connects Tasmania to South Africa via the stunning and seldom-visited East Antarctic coast. Aboard the state-of-the-art Le Commandant Charcot, you’ll traverse some of the wildest and most remote polar landscapes on Earth, sailing in the wake of legendary explorers like Douglas Mawson, Jules Dumont-d’Urville, and James Cook. This epic journey, shaped by ice conditions, reveals millennia-old secrets held within the glaciers and introduces you to the dramatic interplay of ice, water, and wildlife.

Departing from Hobart, a historic hub for polar expeditions, this 29-day adventure takes you across the icy depths of the Southern Ocean, where majestic tabular icebergs drift and humpback whales breach against a backdrop of monumental glaciers. The itinerary provides rare opportunities to explore remote areas near the Australian research stations of Casey and Davis, where Adelie penguins and other endemic species thrive. Each moment is a testament to Antarctica’s unparalleled beauty, from the dazzling white expanse of the polar icecap to the sparkling waters of the Southern Ocean.

As the voyage transitions toward open-water navigation, you will perhaps have the chance to reach the French Southern and Antarctic Lands, in the wake of the great European explorers who came in search of Terra Australis Incognita. Along the way, you’ll be immersed in the stories and insights of expert naturalists, who will enrich your understanding of this fascinating region’s wildlife, history, and landscapes.

This expedition is perfect for those yearning for a bold and transformative adventure. By journey’s end, you’ll have achieved the remarkable feat of traversing one of Earth’s most remote and untamed frontiers, returning home with an indelible sense of wonder and a deeper connection to our planet’s last great wilderness.

Itinerary Day to Day

Day 1

Hobart, Tasmania

Hobart occupies a wonderful location at the mouth of the Derwent River, overseen by majestic Mt Wellington and surrounded by natural bushland. The Tasmanian capital is Australia’s second-oldest city, after Sydney, and the picturesque waterfront is bordered by 19th-century warehouses and colonial mansions. Salamanca Place is packed with shops, galleries and restaurants and the fascinating Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) is a short ferry ride from the quay. Hobart is within easy reach of some of Tasmania’s best-known destinations, from historic Port Arthur and the rugged Tasman Peninsula to Bruny Island, the Huon and Derwent Valleys and Mount Field National Park.
